A roof restoration is mostly repair work with a coating at the end. On a tiled roof the pointing and the tiles determine whether the job lasts; on a metal roof the rust treatment does.
Tiled roofs
Concrete tiles on the interwar and post-war homes around Prahran and Armadale generally outlast their pointing by decades. The mortar along the ridge and hip lines goes brittle, cracks and drops out, and individual tiles slip or break underfoot.
Work runs in sequence: replace broken and slipped tiles, re-bed ridge capping that has lifted, repoint with a flexible pointing compound rather than a rigid sand and cement mix, then pressure clean back to sound tile before sealing and coating.

Rusted screws are replaced, surface rust is treated and primed with an inhibitive primer, and any perforated sheet is replaced rather than coated over. A metal-specific primer and topcoat system goes on once the substrate is sound. Coating over live rust simply hides it while it keeps working.
What it does and does not solve
A restoration protects a sound roof and makes it look new. It does not fix blocked valleys, failed flashings or bad roof plumbing, so those are dealt with during the work rather than painted over.

Is roof painting worth doing on a terrace?
It depends what is up there. Many inner-suburban terraces have a low-pitch metal roof behind a parapet, where rust treatment and a protective coating are genuinely worthwhile maintenance. On a glazed terracotta roof, cleaning and repointing is the better spend.
How long does a roof restoration take?
Typically three to five working days of actual work, spread across a slightly longer window because pointing needs to cure and coats need dry weather between them. Steeper roofs and roofs needing a lot of tile replacement take longer.
Will restoration stop my roof leaking?
The repairs will, if the leak is caused by broken tiles or failed pointing, which it usually is. The coating itself is protection for the surface, not a waterproofing membrane, so anything structural gets fixed first rather than covered up.
Can you paint over an existing roof coating?
Often yes, provided the old coating is sound and well bonded. Where it is flaking or drummy it has to come off first, because a new coat over a failing one will lift with it. That gets assessed on site before quoting.
