What period-home repaints involve

The scope on a period exterior is broad and detailed: rendered or timber walls, decorative render mouldings and parapets, cast-iron lacework and posts, timber fretwork and valance, sash and double-hung windows, panelled doors, and often a verandah with its own set of surfaces. Each element needs its own preparation and, frequently, its own colour within a coordinated scheme. This is slow, hand-led work, and rushing it shows.

Preparation on fragile old surfaces

Period surfaces have usually been painted many times, and old coatings fail in layers. Careful scraping, sanding and, where needed, stripping back to a sound base is essential — as is repairing cracked render, replacing decayed timber, and re-puttying old window glazing. Preparation on a detailed period facade routinely takes longer than the painting itself, and that is the point: a well-prepared period repaint lasts, a rushed one flakes at the details within a couple of years.

Lead paint and safe work

Period homes almost always predate 1970, so lead-based paint in the older layers is the default assumption. Disturbing it carelessly is a genuine health risk. We prepare these surfaces under lead-paint safe-work guidance (AS 4361.2) and WorkSafe and EPA advice — containing dust, avoiding dry sanding where we can, and disposing of paint waste responsibly — to protect your household and ours.

Heritage overlays and colour

Many period homes in Prahran and Armadale sit within heritage overlays. Repainting an already-painted surface in sympathetic tones is often exempt, but a marked colour change, or painting previously unpainted brick or stone, can carry planning considerations. Colours that suit the era

Victorian and Edwardian homes have recognisable colour traditions — heritage reds, greens, creams and deep accent tones picked out on lacework and detail. A good period scheme uses several coordinated colours to bring out the architecture. We are happy to work through this with you and prepare test areas.

A prep-heavy period-home repaint typically ranges from $25,000 to $55,000 or more, driven by size, condition and the amount of detail. A site quote sets the real figure, because no two period homes present the same.
