Should You Paint the Inside or Outside of Your House First?

When a whole house is due for a repaint, one of the first practical questions is what to do first. There is a sensible order, and it is driven less by preference than by condition and weather. Here is how to think about it.

Start with what protects the building

The exterior does a job the interior does not: it keeps water and weather out of the structure. So the first question is whether your exterior is **failing** — flaking, cracked, with bare timber or render exposed. If it is, the exterior comes first, full stop. Painting beautiful interiors while the outside lets moisture into the walls is spending money in the wrong order, because that moisture will eventually damage the very rooms you just finished.

If the exterior is sound

If the outside is in good condition and not due for a few years, then interior work is driven by how the rooms look and live rather than by protection. In that case there is no structural reason to wait — repaint the interiors when you want them done.

Why weather often makes the decision

There is also a purely practical factor: exterior painting needs **dry, mild conditions**. Paint applied over damp surfaces or in the cold does not cure properly, so exterior work is best done in the warmer, drier months. Interior work can happen at any time of year. So a common and sensible pattern is to book the exterior for a good-weather window and fit interior work around it — including through winter, when exterior work is riskier anyway.

Sequencing a whole-house project

When both are being done, a workable order is usually:

1. **Exterior first**, in suitable weather, to protect the building and get the weather-dependent work locked in 2. **Interior next**, room by room, worked around how you use the home

If budget means splitting the work across two stages, let condition decide which half goes first: the failing surface, whichever it is, is the one that cannot wait. A sound surface can always hold another season.

Get both assessed together

Even if you only plan to do one half now, it is worth having both inside and out looked at in one inspection. It tells you which is genuinely urgent, lets you plan the second stage, and often means the quote and access can be organised more efficiently across the two.
